Case Studies - Examples of work that has been undertaken throughtout Barnsley

Attic Room Insulation

As part of the Better Homes Barnsley scheme, work was carried out to insulate the attic room of a 2 bedroom home in Barnsley.

From start to finish, the work took two days to complete.

The sloping ceilings were battened out before being insulated with Xtratherm XT-TL boards. The installation of these insulation boards resulted in a total thickness of 72.5mm being added to the roof. The boards were then skimmed to provide a smooth finish to the ceiling ready for decorating. There was a small residual space in which Knauf mineral wool was used to insulate this area.

During the installation, all flooring from the door entrance to the attic where works took place was covered with ‘roll and stroll’ floor protector in order to prevent damage to flooring and carpets.

The customer reports that, the day after the insulation boards had been fitted, prior to being skimmed, she went into the attic room and, for the first time since they have had the property, there was no condensation to her Velux windows.

The residents were so pleased with the works that they provided the following testimony:

“We have recently had our attic insulated through a government grant and the work was co-ordinated by Alan Howard”

“I would like to feedback how pleased we are with the work.  Alan was very patient with us as we waited for roof repairs to be completed before we could go ahead with the insulation.”

The money we paid will be recouped in less than a year.”

The residents also contacted Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council to state:

“I found the whole process, from start to finish, straightforward and as painless as it could be. From the initial site inspection to the completing of the improvements, the contractors were efficient and considerate.  We are very happy with our new insulation.”

As a result of the insulation works carried out to the attic room, this property will not retain heat and stay warmer for longer, but also save up to £356 a year on its energy bills.

In addition, the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of the property has risen from a D-rating (58) to a C-rating (70).

 

First free* central heating installation in Barnsley

Better Homes Yorkshire is working with nine Local Authorities, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the LEP1 in the Leeds City Region to help tackle fuel poverty.  One of the latest free schemes on offer to eligible households in the Barnsley, Bradford, Calderdale, Craven, Harrogate, Kirklees, Leeds, Selby and York districts, is the installation of a brand new central heating system free of charge. 

One of the first people to benefit from this in Barnsley was John Key who, with the help of his relative Julia Stanney, now has a new energy efficient central heating system in his property.

Financial savings

The costs for heating and hot water in Mr Key’s property prior to the works were in the region of £727 per year for heating and £335 per year for hot water. These figures have now reduced to an estimated amount of £546 per year for heating and £78 per year for hot water. That means Mr Key is saving a total of £438 per year.

In addition Better Homes Yorkshire have checked that the wall cavity is already filled with insulation and have arranged to check if the loft has sufficient insulation.

Energy savings

Mr Key’s whole house was originally heated by just two gas fires in the downstairs rooms of the property, but now this previously hard to heat property benefits from an A rated combi boiler and radiators in all rooms, all of which were installed completely free of charge. Due to the work that has been carried out, the property’s EPC rating rose from a low E (40) to a high D (65).

Resident’s feedback

Mr Key said: “I’ve never had central heating as I thought I couldn’t afford to have it fitted or run it because I’m a pensioner. It was very cold upstairs in winter, especially at night time.”

Thanks to the Better Homes Yorkshire team, Mr Key now lives in a warmer, healthier, more comfortable home.

Mr Key went on to thank everyone involved for the convenience and quality of the works. He said:

“Having central heating fitted has made a real difference, I’m very happy now I’m warm in my house; they’ve done a brilliant job and I’m happy with the work of Barnsley Council, Keepmoat and the fitters Scarbrook. It took all the pressure off, they did all the work and we had nothing to worry about.”

Scarbrook, who fitted the central heating system, are a Which? Trusted Trader and are one of the contractors working with Better Homes Yorkshire to deliver the scheme.

Better Homes Barnsley is a council endorsed energy efficiency scheme which will help private homeowners and tenants of private landlords across the borough live in warmer, healthier homes and also reduce the cost of rising fuel bills. The scheme involves energy efficiency home improvements such as insulation, boilers and renewable energy technologies using the latest government ECO funding to get the best offers for homeowners.

As part of the Better Homes Barnsley scheme, a limited pot of funding from Barnsley Council is available to help low income households meet the cost of energy efficiency measures. The Green Deal and Green Deal Home Improvement Fund

Following an announcement made by the government on 23 July, Green Deal Finance and cashback through the Home Improvement Fund is no longer available. You can find out more on Gov UK about the end of Green Deal funding.

 

Renewable energy incentives

The main energy sources concerned are:
• sunlight
• heat from the earth, the air or water sources
• plants grown for fuel (biomass or biofuels)
• the movement of water (known as hydro)
• wind

Cavity Wall InsulationWhat is Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI)?

Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) is an effective method of making your home warmer, more comfortable and healthier by filling the air gap also known as the ‘cavity’ in-between your walls.

How will I know if my home has cavity walls?

It's likely that your home requires this type of insulation measure if it was built after the 1920’s when they typically constructed external walls in two layers of brickwork, inner and outer leaves, with an empty space in the middle called the cavity. This can be the cause of around a third of your homes heat being lost.

What are the benefits of new Cavity Wall Insulation?

Installation typically takes half a day. Cavity wall insulation can save you up to £135* per year on your energy bills. It is covered by a full 25 year guarantee. Your home will be warmer and more comfortable. It will also discourage future condensation which can cause mould to grow, as the walls and air will retain the heat. This is particularly important for people who suffer with certain allergies or chest complaints.

How does it work?

Cavity Wall Insulation will slow down the rate at which heat escapes from your home. The insulation material such as mineral fibre and bonded beads is made of lots of tiny air pockets and is injected into the cavity space using specialist equipment. The air pockets make it difficult for heat to escape, therefore reducing heat loss and saving money on your energy bills.

What should I expect from the work?

It should typically take up to 4 hours to install this type of insulation. Before we begin, we’ll need access to all the outside walls of your property so please remove cars, caravans and garden furniture away from the building.

Trained installers will drill small holes (about the size of a 10p piece) at intervals of 1 metre to 1.5 metre in the outside walls. Using specialist equipment our installers will inject the insulation through these holes into the cavity space. The holes are then filled matching the existing walls as closely as possible.

During the work our Liaison officer will be your main point of contact. They’re there to let you know exactly what’s going on at every stage and to give you all the help, support and information you need.

What is Bespoke Insulation solutions?

Bespoke insulation solutions are used when a cavity wall cannot be treated using standard lower cost insulation measures because the materials are unsuitable due to the age of the property and/or the nature of its construction type.

How will I know if my home can benefit from Bespoke Insulation solutions?

Properties which can benefit from bespoke insulation solution usually have one of the following construction characteristics:

  • A cavity that is less than 50mm wide
  • The wall is a prefabricated concrete construction with a cavity
  • The wall has a metal frame construction with a cavity
  • A stone cavity. Many older properties have uneven cavities in walls constructed of a natural stone outer leaf and a block or brick inner leaf
  • A timber frame uninsulated studwork cavity. These properties have a masonry cavity, which must not be filled
  • Cavities that have already been partially filled. These can be topped up with a ‘hard-to-treat system’
  • The property is simply too high for standard cavity treatment i.e. it is more than four floors high
  • The property has features such as a conservatory that can create difficulties in terms of access
  • The property is located near the sea or on top of hillsides that are exposed to severe wind-driven rain
  • The property has significant cracking in the outer leaf of the wall

What are the benefits of Bespoke Insulation solutions for cavity walls?

Installation typically takes one day. Bespoke insulation solutions for cavity walls will reduce your heating bills because the house will stay warmer for longer. It will also discourage future condensation which can cause mould growth, as the walls and air will retain the heat. This is particularly important for people who suffer with certain allergies or chest complaints. This kind of insulation will also reduce damp/wind driven rain penetration problems and provide flood resilience protection. The original features and character of the building will be retained.

Hard to Treat Stone Cavity Wall InsulationHow does it work?

The standard practice for insulating a property which qualifies for this type of insulation is to drill holes in the outer leaf of brickwork and inject the appropriate insulation material into the wall cavity, which will make it difficult for heat to escape, therefore reducing heat loss and saving money on your energy bills.

What should I expect from the work?

It should typically take up to 8 hours to install this type of insulation. Before we begin we’ll need access to all the outside walls of your property so we will ask you to please remove cars, caravans and garden furniture away from the building.

Trained installers will drill small holes in the outside walls. Using specialist equipment our installers will inject the appropriate insulation material through these holes into the cavity space. The holes are then filled matching the existing walls as closely as possible.

You will be appointed a Liaison officer who will be your main point of contact throughout the works. They’re there to let you know exactly what’s going on at every stage and to give you all the help, support and information you need.

Loft InsulationWhat is loft insulation?

Loft Insulation is an effective method of making your home warmer and more comfortable. Lofts can be poorly insulated or not insulated at all. These homes lose on average 25% of their heat through the roof. Without adequate insulation your home is very inefficient and very expensive to heat.

What are the benefits of Loft Insulation?

Installation can typically be completed within 2 hours (depending on size of your property). Typically around 25% of heat is lost through poorly insulated rooms. Increasing your loft insulation to the recommended 270mm could save you up to £175* a year on your energy bills. The insulation should last for over 40 years.

How does it work?

Loft insulation is a material made up of lots of tiny air pockets; these pockets trap heat, reducing the rate at which heat escapes. Our installer uses loft roll insulation, which is unrolled, cut to length and placed within the loft space. A minimum thickness of 270mm will be achieved. Your home may already have some degree of loft insulation and may only need a top-up to ensure its depth is sufficient to keep your heat in, making your home warmer and reducing your energy bills.

What should I expect from the work?

It should typically take 2-3 hours to install this type of insulation. Before we can start we’ll ask you to clear your loft space of things such as suitcases and boxes so our installers can easily move around. If any existing insulation needs to be removed we will do this.

The installation process is quick and easy and will cause little disruption to you and your family. You’ll be able to place any items back in the loft afterwards but always ensure secure floor spaces are used. The insulation material will not hold heavy objects.

External Wall InsulationWhat is External Wall Insulation (EWI)?

External Wall Insulation (EWI) is an effective method of making your home warmer and more comfortable. Solid walls are the cause of excessive loss of heat and damp access that can only be rectified with either internal or external wall insulation.

What are the benefits of new External Wall Insulation?

Installation takes between 3-4 weeks. You could save around £475* a year on your energy bills. Your home will have better weather proofing and a renewed appearance. Your home will stay warmer and more comfortable.

How does it work?

External Wall Insulation will slow down the rate at which heat escapes from your home. The insulation provides a coating or filling to your outside walls using a layer of material that will only allow heat to pass through it very slowly. This reduces heat loss and saves money on your energy bills.

What should I expect from the work?

Before we begin work we’ll need to erect scaffolding to the outside walls of your home so our installers can work safely and reach the entire wall area. We will ask you to please remove any cars, caravans and garden furniture away from the building. We may also need deal with attached features and move or adjust pipe work, gates and fences, external wall fixtures and satellite dish if you have one. After the preparation work is complete the outer walls of your home will be fitted with insulation board panels, mechanical fixings and adhesive that are over coated silicone finish.

You’ll probably experience some noise and dust during the installation but our installers will always try to keep any disruption to a minimum. Local authority, planning and building regulation applications may be needed for this type of work but don’t worry, we’ll help you arrange this.

Thermal Imaging of Insulated PropertiesWhat is Internal Wall Insulation (IWI)?

Internal wall insulation (IWI) is an effective method of making your home warmer, more comfortable and healthier and is for properties that are more unusual than your average house.

How will I know if my home requires Internal Wall Insulation (IWI)?

If your home is made of brick, and the bricks have an alternating long-short-long pattern, then the walls are likely to be solid. If the brickwork is not visible, measuring the thickness of the wall at any entrance or window will help to determine the construction type, if the wall is less than 260mm, then it is likely a solid wall. If your home was built before 1919, the external walls are probably solid rather than cavity walls.

What are the benefits of new Internal Wall Insulation (IWI)?

If you own a period property or your home has special architectural features, then Internal Wall insulation is particularly appropriate if you need to maintain the external appearance of the building.

How does it work?

Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) will slow down the rate at which heat escapes from your home. The insulation is fitted by either rigid insulation boards to the wall, or by building a stud wall filled in with insulation material such as mineral wool fibre. This reduces heat loss and saves money on your energy bills. The process doesn’t alter the appearance of outside walls, with only slight reduction of floor area.

What should I expect from the work?

Internal Wall Insulation (IWI) is a significant undertaking that involves a degree of disruption. Rooms where the work is being carried out may not be functional until the insulation is installed.

Before we begin work we’ll ask you to clear the room where the work is being carried out. Please remove furniture, ornaments, photo-frames, etc. We may also need to move or adjust pipe work, wiring, door frames, radiators, skirting boards, window sills and plug sockets. A skip may be required, which we will arrange.

After the preparation work is complete the inside walls of your home will be fitted with insulation. The works will produce dust and could be noisy at times. The newly insulated walls and adjacent surfaces will need to be re-decorated when the work has finished. It also can make it difficult to fix heavy items to walls but special fixings are available.

What is Room-in-roof (RIR) insulation?

Not all properties have a room-in-roof. If you have a room in a converted loft or attic with a permanent staircase, not just a loft ladder, this is a room-in-roof. 

Room-in-roof insulation is an effective method of making your existing loft room more energy efficient and a more comfortable living space.

How will I know if my home requires Room-in-Roof insulation?

The type of roof insulation required will depend entirely on the type of roof your property has. If your home has a pitched roof, and has an attic room with a staircase leading to it, and it is uninsulated then it is likely you can have room-in-roof insulation. Flat roofs are more of a challenge to insulate.

What are the benefits of Room-in-roof (RIR) insulation?

Room-in-Roof (RIR) insulation may be the best option if your property requires a lot of heating in winter and is very hot in summer. Lofts can be poorly insulated or not insulated at all. These homes lose on average 25% of their heat through the roof. Without adequate insulation your home is very inefficient and very expensive to heat. Room-in-roof insulation can make a massive difference to your energy bills all year round and make the home much more warmer and comfortable living spaces.

How does it work?

Room-in-roof (RIR) insulation typically takes one to two weeks to install. There are three main types of insulation commonly used in roof conversions, which are rigid insulation, flexible insulation and thermal lining boards. Rigid insulation boards are available in various thicknesses. Flexible insulation and thermal lining boards, though thinner and cheaper, are not as effective as rigid insulation boards but can be a good compromise in difficult to insulate and small areas where the size of the room may become reduced as a result of adding thick insulation materials to walls and roof.

What should I expect from the work?

Before we begin work we’ll ask you to clear the room where the work is being carried out. This type of insulation typically takes three days to install. Once building regulations are approved, the work will involve battening and putting an insulated board on to the sloping walls and flat ceilings, plaster boarding and skimming. The final thickness will be between 75m and 150mm.

We may also need to move or adjust pipe work, wiring, radiators and skirting boards. The works will produce dust and could be noisy at times. The newly insulated walls and adjacent surfaces will need to be re-decorated when the work has finished.

Boiler InstallerWhat is a High Efficiency A-rated Condensing Gas Boiler?

Installation of a High Efficiency Gas Boiler is an effective method of making your home warmer and more comfortable. How will I know if my home requires a new boiler? If your boiler is more than 10 years old it's likely to be G-rated meaning it could be inefficient and expensive to run. Replacing your old system could make your home warmer and save you money on energy bills.

What are the benefits of a new boiler?

By replacing an old G-rated boiler with a new high efficiency condensing boiler and improving your heating controls, you could cut your home’s carbon dioxide emissions – saving as much as £300 a year*. You will have instant hot water. Your home should be warmer and more comfortable.

How does it work?

Gas boilers can be used for heating your home and providing hot water. They do this by heating up water that circulates around the pipe work connecting to your radiators. Many homes still have old G-rated boiler systems that can be very inefficient because they lose a lot of heat through the flue: these are known as non-condensing boilers. High efficiency condensing boilers re-use heat that would normally be lost into the atmosphere from the flue, keeping your home warmer and more energy efficient.

What should I expect from the work?

It should take around two days to complete the installation and will be done by one of our Gas Safe Registered engineers. Replacing your heating system means we’ll usually fit a new gas boiler, and may also put in new radiators as well. Sometimes, we’ll need to remove the main fire in your living room, and if necessary you may need a new electric fire.

Before we arrive please put away any fragile or valuable items and remove things from the wall to save them getting knocked. Boiler replacements can be quite noisy and dirty so we’ll always use dust sheets to protect floor coverings and furniture that has not been removed.
