Better Homes Barnsley and Barnsley Council help to heat homes

How it works

Barnsley Council, together with Better Homes Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Combined Authority, secured £282,000  in government Local Growth Funding to improve homes in Barnsley. In addition, funding provided by Barnsley Council, Berneslai Homes and ECO Flex funding meant a total investment of £313,000 in Barnsley homes. The funding was used to install external, internal and cavity wall insulation, loft and attic room insulation, and new energy saving boilers in 41owner-occupied and social homes on Cemetery Road in Barnsley.

Living in a cold home negatively affects children’s weight, risk of developing asthma, emotional and mental health and learning.* It was hoped that improving the homes on Cemetery Road would make a big difference to the lives of local families and children who live there.

Living in a more energy efficient home – A Case Study

Ms Fields lives in an end-terrace home on Cemetery Road, Barnsley. The mother of three used to struggle with keeping her family’s home warm: “if it was cold, the central heating didn’t touch it, and the fire didn’t touch it either. It was very hard to find a warm space in any part of the property. It was very uncomfortable, very difficult to do stuff…  I think in a way… it affected my mental health”.

Ms Fields had thought about improving her home’s energy efficiency by installing solar panels and external wall insulation before but found the cost of the works prohibitive, so she was “really quite excited” when she heard about the scheme and signed up to have external and internal wall insulation fitted.  Getting the work done was “overall a really good experience because everyone was so nice and supportive and pleasant and professional”. Since getting the work done, Ms Fields has noticed an “absolutely huge” difference in her home: “it’s quieter… The house feels better. We can go in any room and it feels a normal temperature. The children ask what the weather’s like outside, whether it’s cold... It feels more comfortable. It just makes the home feel like a home which is lovely”.
