Better Homes Yorkshire supports Gas Safety Week

Back

In support of Gas Safety Week (16 – 22 September 2019), Better Homes Yorkshire urges all homeowners, landlords and tenants to make sure their boiler is in tip top condition and is safe, especially as we approach the colder season.

Worrying figures released by British Gas revealed that 26,000 unsafe or dangerous gas and electric appliances were found during home visits in the first seven months of this year.

Gas Safety Week, organised by the Gas Safe Register, is an annual week aimed at raising the awareness of taking care of your gas appliance and making your home safe.

According to the HSE, if left unchecked, poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Here are a few tips to keep your home safe:

  • Check your appliances every year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. Tenants need to ensure their landlord arranges this
  • Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered by visiting www.gassaferegister.co.uk
  • Check your Gas Safe register ID card
  • Familiarise yourself with the warning signs of carbon monoxide poisoning; dizziness, breathlessness, headaches, nausea, collapsing, falling unconscious
  • Buy an audible carbon monoxide alarm
  • Use gas appliances for their intended use only
  • Provide enough ventilation for gas appliances to burn correctly
