Wakefield family’s life is changed forever

A family in Wakefield have had their lives changed for the better after Better Homes Yorkshire and Wakefield Council installed a fully-funded new gas central heating system in their home.

Last winter, Mr and Mrs Smith somehow coped with no heating within their home and used electric heaters to try and keep warm. This year, they knew things would have to change.

Earlier this year, Mrs Smith was diagnosed with five different types of cancer, meaning she had to give up work. Mr Smith, who is on a zero hour’s contract, has also had to lose work to support her with her treatment. Additionally, the couple have a daughter to care for who has cerebral palsy and limited mobility, for whom it is imperative to keep warm.

The family were paying £60 a week for electricity to keep the heaters on and keep their daughter warm.

Mrs Smith contacted us to see if we could help with the heating at all and they were over the moon when they found out that they would be eligible for the work to be completed fully-funded.

Working with our installation contractor Scarbrook Heating and Plumbing Ltd, we replaced the boiler and radiators in their home meaning that they won’t have to go another winter with high bills and a cold home.

Mrs Smith has complimented Better Homes Yorkshire as a whole, saying the workmen who put it in were great and also rating the service ‘excellent.’

Since the work has been done, Mrs Smith said it ‘has been a dream’ and their home feels ‘more homely.’ They have also noticed a difference in their bills already with them only spending £25 a week now on electricity instead of £60.

Mrs Smith could not have been more complimentary of the scheme and the impact it’s had on her and their family as a whole.
