Better Homes Barnsley and Barnsley Council help to heat homes

About us

Better Homes Yorkshire are working with ten local authorities across Yorkshire, including Barnsley Council, to improve the energy efficiency of privately owned and rented properties so that residents can live in warmer and healthier homes.

Better Homes Barnsley has been in operationsince 2014 and since then hundreds of households across the borough have benefited from new heating and insulation in their homes.

Boiler Replacement – A Case Study

To celebrate the success of the scheme in Barnsley, one of Better Homes Barnsley’s contractors, Scarbrook Plumbing and Heating, awarded the council a free boiler to give away to one lucky resident. The winner was decided by a competition which was advertised online and at the Mayor’s Parade in Barnsley Town Centre.

The lucky winners were Mr and Mrs Griffiths from Athersley who entered the competition while at the Mayor’s Parade. When they first heard they had won, the couple were sceptical: “I said ‘that’s a load of rubbish, they don’t give boilers away… I’ve never won anything in my life”.

Their new Ideal boiler was installed in their home free of charge a few weeks later by Scarbook engineer Corey Turner. Mr and Mrs Griffiths were very pleased with Scarbrook’s service, which was “finished in three hours”: “They were lovely people, very quick”.

Winning came at a good time, as their old boiler was “coming to the end of its days” explained Mrs Griffiths. “I don’t know how we would have afforded to purchase a new one… we would have struggled”. Their new highly energy efficient boiler “heats water a lot quicker than the old one” and they have already seen savings: “I gave a meter reading to the gas company and they said ‘I think you’ve read the gas wrong’”.
