Do you qualify for a free central heating system?

Better Homes Yorkshire have up to 100% funding to install first time central heating systems (subject to survey).

National Grid and Community Interest Company, Affordable Warmth Solution (AWS) have launched a £150m warm homes funding designed to support local authorities, to address some of the issues affecting fuel poor households.

To be eligible you must:

  • You must privately own or privately rent your house.
  • All central heating systems must be ‘first time central heating systems’, meaning the property does not have a gas central heating system currently installed; and the new system should distribute heat to at least one additional room - however, a system with a non-gas fuel source (for example solid fuel fire with a back boiler) with distribution to more than one, but not all of the property’s rooms, is eligible for replacement with a gas fired system.
  • Measures can only be provided to households at risk of being in fuel poverty, which is determined by either their ECO Affordable Warmth status (applicable benefits or Flexible Eligibility) or through the LCR Low Income High Cost test.
  • If you do not currently have gas to your property, we also have funding to connect you to the gas mains subject to survey.

About Central Heating

In the 1970’s, only 30 percent of UK households had a central heating system installed. This has now risen to 95% today, however this still leaves over 1 million homes across the UK that are still without such heating systems, with a significant amount of these being across the Yorkshire region.

What is a Central Heating System?

Central heating systems are the most common forms of heating a home in the UK. They provide warmth to the inside of a property by circulating hot water to radiators all around the building. Radiators are mounted to the wall where the hot water passes in to and releases heat into a room. Electric storage heaters are also used as an alternative central heating system.

Cost of Alternative Heating Systems - The average UK home uses gas for central heating and spends about £550 each year on space heating alone (DECC). Providing the same amount of usable heat with an oil boiler costs about £700. With electric storage heaters on the lower Economy 7 tariff (12-7am), the costs would be about £900, while using standard rate electricity would cost a whopping £1,950.

Maintain an Ideal Temperature All Year Round - Maintaining your home at a healthy temperature (18 - 21 degrees) will reduce the risk of respiratory problems, strokes, heart attacks, hypothermia and accidents around the home. A central heating system can help ensure a sustained temperature throughout a house.
